Those living here in the Triangle, especially the Raleigh and Durham residents who visit Park Ophthalmology for their exams and eye concerns probably know Beth R. Friedland MD, as a board-certified Ophthalmologist dedicated to the best eye care possible for her patients. But there is more to Dr. Friedland than her 30 years of experience in Ocular Gerontology, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Occupational Eye Safety, and Laser Eye Surgery.
What many people and patients do not know is Dr. Friedland has the true willingness to serve; she volunteers with Eye Care America, the Foundation for the American Academy of Ophthalmology that helps the under-served receive regular eye exams, which help reduce the chances for avoidable blindness and severe visual impairment. This award-winning organization provides eye exams and up to one year of care to U.S. citizens and legal residents within the Continental U.S., Hawaii and Puerto Rico through volunteer ophthalmologists, like Dr. Beth, often at no out-of-pocket cost to those who qualify.
Ophthalmic Medicine has prompted her continuous passion for the issues and effects of Glaucoma, which challenges more than two million Americans and is the leading cause of blindness here in the United States. This focus has led her to author a chapter on Glaucoma medications in a textbook about Ocular Pharmacology.
Dr. Friedland also shares her experiences and knowledge with future Ophthalmologists by working as a Clinical Associate Professor at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine.
By offering regular eye exams and surgeries for her patients in both Raleigh and Durham at Park Ophthalmology, she also looks for new ways to help by conducting continued research. Her latest studies focus on new techniques to improve eye care and new drugs to treat Dry Eye, the serious condition where there are insufficient tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. She travels around the world to speak on the importance of new techniques and research and has done so in China, Israel and Europe.
In 2011, Dr. Friedland was honored with the Business Leader Women Extraordinaire Award and the Triangle Business Woman of the Year Award.
While Park Ophthalmology patients are glad to have Dr. Beth Friedland care for their eyes and vision, she is proud to be doing as much as she can to spread her knowledge and share her talents around the world.
