The Foods of the Eye Are Plentiful

Kids across the Triangle and North Carolina are always told by their parents to eat those carrots because the orange vegetables are good for their vision. While it’s true that carrots are a great “eye food” because of their high levels of vitamin A, they aren’t the only food that can keep the eye tissue healthy.

Regardless of age, the next time you are reaching for a snack or side dish, consider these awesome eye-openers for your healthy vision:

Apricots: This sweet fruit is rich in beta carotene, which can help with night vision. Apricots may even play a part in preventing cataracts. If you are not a big fan of this seasonal fruit, load up on the beta carotene by munching on cantaloupe, sweet potatoes or winter squash.
Avocados: Sure, guacamole is certainly in style. Avocados are rich in so many vitamins, and they contain morelutein than any other fruit. Lutein is a key ingredient that helps prevent macular degeneration and cataracts.
Kale: This sea plant is packed with powerful antioxidants that may help protect against eye problems as well, including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
Peanuts: Whether at a party in Raleigh or at a Durham Bulls game, feel free to grab a few peanuts. They’re a great source of vitamin E, which can slow the progression of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration and peanuts can help protect your eyes from free-radical damage. Try almonds and  hazelnuts as well.
Sunflower Seeds: Snack on something salty while you add selenium to your diet could be a win-win. It is another powerful  ingredient that may prevent cataracts and promotes overall eye health.
Whole Grains: Keeping your glycemic index (GI) low may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration as well. You can lower your GI by substituting high-fiber whole grains instead of refined carbs. Skip the refined flour in favor of brown rice, whole oats, and whole-wheat breads.
Other Eye Foods: Broccoli, eggs, oranges, salmon and spinach are also great additions to a diet rich in eye health.
